12 Bible Verses About Encouraging Others
What does the Bible say about encouraging others?
The Bible has a lot to say! Scripture like Romans 12:15 tells us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn”. Encouragement is an important part of life, and scripture can provide the guidance we need in order to be successful encouragers.
The Bible also instructs us to be generous with our time, resources, and words. In 1 Thessalonians 5:11 it says, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
We all need encouragement from time to time, and the bible provides us with direction on how we can best provide that for others. Scripture directs us to offer words of hope, prayers of understanding, comforting hugs or even just a listening ear.
By encouraging others, we are given the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, ensuring that those around us have the support they need in both good times and bad.

Scripture about Encouraging Others
Job 16:2-5
Then Job answered and said,
2 I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.
3 Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest?
4 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.
5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.
“I have heard many things like these;
you are miserable comforters, all of you!
3 Will your long-winded speeches never end?
What ails you that you keep on arguing?
4 I also could speak like you,
if you were in my place;
I could make fine speeches against you
and shake my head at you.
5 But my mouth would encourage you;
comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
Then Job spoke again:
2 “I have heard all this before.
What miserable comforters you are!
3 Won’t you ever stop blowing hot air?
What makes you keep on talking?
4 I could say the same things if you were in my place.
I could spout off criticism and shake my head at you.
5 But if it were me, I would encourage you.
I would try to take away your grief.“
Then Job answered and said:
2 “I have heard many such things;
miserable comforters are you all.
3 Shall windy words have an end?
Or what provokes you that you answer?
4 I also could speak as you do,
if you were in my place;
I could join words together against you
and shake my head at you.
5 I could strengthen you with my mouth,
and the solace of my lips would assuage your pain.
In the book of Job, we are taken on a journey through his grief. Although Job 16:2-5 is part of a larger passage that discusses Job’s suffering, in these particular verses we see Job specifically calling out his friends for being lousy comforters during a time when he needs love and support.
These verses remind us of the power we have to help others by speaking encouraging words; even if it feels like our efforts are being rebuked or overlooked.
1 Thessalonians 2:11-12
11 As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,
12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
11 And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. 12 We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.
11 For you know how, like a father with his children, 12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
This scripture highlights the importance of encouraging others and walking in a manner that is worthy of God. It serves as an important reminder to those who read it, that we should always strive to do our best when it comes to following the teachings of scripture and being mindful of our actions.
We can use these verses as a source of encouragement to continue living faithfully and encouraging others to do so as well.

After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”
After the usual readings from the books of Moses and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message: “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.”

May we also be inspired by these words from Scripture and strive to help others grow closer to God through His Word.
Romans 1:12
That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.
that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.
Romans 1:12 commands us to be devoted to one another in brotherly and sisterly love. This verse speaks of the importance of showing kindness, respect, encouragement, and support to our fellow man. It reminds us that we should consider others as more important than ourselves and think of them before our own needs.
Romans 15:4
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
The Bible is a source of encouragement and hope for us. By sharing it with others, we are offering them the ultimate hope and encouragement they need.
Ephesians 6:22
Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
I have sent him to you for this very purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you.
I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.
This bible passage from Ephesians 6:22 was written by the Apostle Paul. After urging the church of Ephesus (and us) to to put on “the whole armor of God”, he informs them that he’s sent a brother in Christ, Tychicus, for the sole purpose of encouraging them! What love and care Paul showed for these people, even from a distance!
1 Thessalonians 5:14
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
We are urged to encourage one another and build each other up. This scripture reminds us that we should support our brothers and sisters in Christ by uplifting and encouraging them, offering patience and assistance.

1 Timothy 5:1-2
Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. 2 Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.
Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.
This scripture serves to remind us that showing love and respect to our brothers and sisters in Christ, regardless of age or status, is honorable. We can do this by being encouraging and supportive of them—just like we would with family members.
Hebrews 3:12-14
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
This is a call to arms for believers – to reach out to one another and help each other stay strong in the face of adversity and temptation. When we do this, we can remain steadfast in faith and adhere to God’s will for our lives. Encouraging others helps remind us that we are not alone on this journey with Jesus Christ!
